Teacher Education Overview

In 1897, China was born in the modern sense of teacher education. In 1897, the businessman Sheng Xuanhuai founded the Nanyang Public School in Shanghai and set up a normal school, which became the origin of Chinese teacher education. In 1902, the Jingshi University Normal School opened and became the seed of China's higher normal education. In the same year, Zhang Zhen, an industrialist, founded the Tongzhou Democratic Normal School in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, which opened a precedent for the Chinese Normal School.
